HALO: Silence and Light

Music: Kristjan Kannukene, Choreography and Movement: Teet Kask, Set Design: Ülar Mark, Lighting Design: Margus Vaigur, Visuals: Mart Anderson, Stage Graphics: Loreida Hein and Kard Subbi Organizers: HALO Collective and Louis Kahn Estonia Foundation

As part of the international programme marking the 125th anniversary of the birth of Louis I. Kahn, the HALO Collective presents its new performance, “Silence and Light”, created by choreographer Teet Kask and musician Kristjan Kannukene.
The performance brings together music, movement, light and architecture into a unified spatial experience in which the historic environment becomes an active participant. Niguliste Museum-Church in Tallinn and Kuressaare Episcopal Castle in Saaremaa are not merely venues but dramaturgical partners whose space, acoustics and light shape both the course of the performance and the audience's experience.

The title of the performance is derived from one of the most important philosophical concepts of the world-renowned architect Louis I. Kahn – “Silence and Light” – which was also the title of his famous lecture delivered at ETH Zurich in 1969.
For Kahn, silence did not mean the absence of sound. Silence was the original state of creation – potential, idea and possibility before manifestation. Light, in turn, represented becoming visible, form, presence and realization. In his view, all creation emerges from the meeting of silence and light.
Teet Kask is an acclaimed Estonian choreographer, director, performer, mentor and curator whose creative career spans more than three decades. He studied at the Tallinn Ballet School, the City University of London in choreography, and Aalto University in cultural management. He has worked with the Estonian National Opera, the Royal Swedish Opera and the Norwegian National Opera, and has created more than sixty productions both in Estonia and internationally.
Teet is the founder and artistic director of HALO.

Kristjan Kannukene is a musician, composer, improviser and intermedia artist whose work combines classical music education, contemporary improvisation and experimental sonic expression. He studied viola and contemporary improvisation at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre and furthered his studies at Trinity Laban Conservatoire in London as well as at higher education institutions in Lucerne and Zurich, Switzerland. Kristjan is currently a doctoral researcher at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, conducting artistic research into the symbiosis of viola and voice. Kristjan is also the artistic director of HETKfEST.
His artistic work is characterized by a deep interest in the relationships between sound, silence and space. In HALO productions, music is not merely accompaniment but an independent dramaturgical force that shapes the atmosphere and progression of the performance.
This year marks the 125th anniversary of the birth of Louis I. Kahn, one of the world's most influential architects. Estonia, his birthplace, is celebrating this milestone with the international programme Kahn 125, bringing together architecture, art, music and cultural heritage. The performance “HALO: Silence and Light” is part of this programme and offers an opportunity to experience Kahn’s ideas beyond architecture – through music, movement and spatial experience.
